Tye River, VA Concentration Yard
This dry kiln facility is located in the heart of the Appalachian Forest Region with over 40 sawmills within a 100 miles of the facility. The immediate region has excellent Red Oak, White Oak, and Poplar. In addition, there are limited quantities of Walnut, Ash, and White Pine. The yard is located close enough to the lumber producers in West Virginia to make it possible to draw not only the Red Oak but the Soft and Hard Maples and Cherry to the yard. The supply base is reliable and plentiful.
While the location of the yard is great for the supply base, its location is also a competitive advantage for shipments of kiln dried lumber. The yard is located a little over 3 hours from the Port of Norfolk, Va. In addition, the location is ideal for shipments via truck to points north and south along the entire East Coast of the United States.
The facility consists of approximately 50 acres, of which approximately 25 acres are in use. There is another 15 acres which can be used for expansion with very little expense.
We have two incoming grading stations for the grading of green lumber and two stackers for putting lumber on sticks. The capacity of the incoming grading stations and stackers is approximately 14,000,000’ per year based on a single shift operation. We have an excellent air drying yard which has a capacity to hold approximately 2,500,000’. In addition, we have an open sided shed which is used for air drying thick oak. This shed protects the thicker oaks from the sun and rain. Due to the relatively long air drying times of thicker oak, the sun and rain can cause degrade as well as discoloration. Both of these issues can result in a drop in selling prices. Our experience has been the air dried shed has virtually eliminated degrade and discoloration. The capacity of this air dried shed is approximately 800,000’.
There are eight Irvington-Moore kilns with a total capacity of 700,000’ on a 4/4 count. When loading 8/4 lumber into the kilns, we reach approximately 110,000’ per kiln. All kilns are computer controlled. The annual kiln out put can vary depending on the mix of specie and thickness. The steam source is a 600 h.p. wood fired Hurst boiler. The boiler is sized to accommodate about 1,500,000’ of kiln capacity. There is also space near the boiler for this additional kiln capacity.
The lumber is taken off sticks, graded, and packaged utilizing a Morris Industrial 28 bay sorter. This sorter has two grading stations, a trim saw, a package maker, end painting station and a strapping station in line. Lumber comes into the sorter KD on sticks and exits the sorter in a banded and painted bundle, with tallies, ready for shipment. Green lumber can also be run through this system. This system is rated for 100,000’ of production per day per 8 hour shift.
Approximately 2,500,000’ of kiln dried lumber can be stored in dry storage sheds. We are able to load containers from a loading dock in one of the storage sheds.
