Blackstone, VA Concentration Yard
This dry kiln facility is located approximately 110 miles from the Port of Norfolk, Va. and has a rail siding into the yard. The proximity to the Appalachian Forest Region sawmills and a gateway to international shipping make this facility unique. There are many sawmills within easy trucking distance of the facility. Supply is reliable and plentiful. The location is well suited to be able to serve customers throughout the United States by either truck or rail. With the closeness to the Port of Norfolk, the international marketplace is readily accessible.
The facility consists of 33.55 acres, of which approximately 15 acres are in use. It is served by public sewer and water. A portion of the buildings have a sprinkler system installed.
We have one incoming grading station and one stacker to handle the green lumber coming into the facility. The capacity of the grading station and stacker is approximately 8,000,000’ per year on a single shift basis. We have an excellent air drying yard which has the capacity of about 1,600,000’.
There are nine concrete and block kilns that vary in size from 30,000’ capacity to 75,000’ capacity on a 4/4 count. The total capacity is 625,000 board feet on a 4/4 count. When loading thicker stock into the kilns, we can reach a capacity of 775,000’. All kilns use computerized Irvington-Moore controls. The annual kiln output will vary depending on specie and thickness mix. The steam source for the kilns is a 600 h.p. wood waste boiler. In addition, the boiler provides heat to the manufacturing plant.
There are three grading lines used for green or kiln dried lumber. Each of these lines is capable of handling lumber that is KD on sticks. Two of the grading lines have a planer in line. The planer may be bypassed when not in use. This allows the flexibility of using one, two or three lines for rough lumber or two of the three lines to produce surfaced lumber. This greatly enhances the reaction time to customers needs.
We have almost 70,000 square feet of storage space for kiln dried lumber. Approximately 2,000,000’ can be stored in this space.
In addition to the kiln drying operation, there is a manufacturing plant that is approximately 61,000 square feet in size. This plant is set up to complement the kiln operation and produce value added services. The equipment in the plant is capable of producing a slick finished surfacing job. The plant equipment also is set up to gang rip or straight line rip one edge or two edges. In addition, there is an Ultimizer computerized chop saw system used to defect strips for the production of moulder blanks or flooring blanks.
